The Department of Biology is within the Faculty of Science and offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. Biology offers the widest range of courses in Atlantic Canada and offers biology and marine biology programs. Reporting to the Department Chair, the Administrative Officer is responsible for a wide variety of functions supporting the teaching and research activities of the department, including but not limited to financial and human resources oversight, and the management of facilities and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide the Chair with confidential information, data and advice to support administrative and financial decisions.
  • Develop, implement and regularly review the department's annual operating budget. Ensure the Chair is apprised of the department's financial position throughout the year.
  • Oversee and administer all department endowments, restricted and special funds as well as oversee the department's cost recovery activities. Monitor all grants, overhead accounts, and graduate incentive funding. 
  • Manage 14 technical and clerical support staff including hiring, performance management, attendance management, and approval of hours of work (including overtime) as required.
  • Oversee the department's physical resources spread over multiple floors, including a greenhouse, aquatic animal facility, Scientific Imaging Suite and McCulloch Museum. This includes overseeing maintenance, repairs, and renovations, supervising key distribution, and coordinating all moves. 
  • Address health and safety concerns and needs of the department, redirecting queries and issues as appropriate.

Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in business or a related field, along with at least five to seven years of progressively responsible administrative and supervisory experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience). Extensive experience in financial management and budget development is required as is experience in an academic and/or research environment. Must demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills along with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. The ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a high-pressured environment is essential.

Salary Range: $66,445 - $89,896 per annum (ADM-07). This is a provisional classification. Formal classification procedures will be initiated by the Compensation & Job Evaluation Unit in approximately six months. This position is part of the Dalhousie Professional & Managerial Group (DPMG).
