Reporting to the Director, Opportunity and Belonging, the Accessibility Learning Strategist is responsible for ensuring that all NSCAD students with documented disabilities are provided with appropriate learning support services to meet their educational goals. These students may be those living with learning disabilities, mental health conditions, mobility or functional disabilities, sensory or communication disabilities, and/or neurological disabilities. To ensure successful educational outcomes for students experiencing disabilities, the Accessibility Learning Strategist's responsibility includes assessment of needs, preparation and maintenance of records, recommendation of intervention strategies, liaising with students, faculty, and the Office of Student Experience (OSE) to provide academic accommodations, and management of a caseload of students.

Responsibilities

  • Work individually with students with a broad range of disabilities such as clinical diagnoses, mental health, cognitive and intellectual disabilities in support of their learning needs and academic outcomes through customized learning strategies, study skills and education success planning
  • Manage the recruitment and scheduling of ASL interpreters, tutors, exam proctors and/or note-takers, as necessary.
  • Interpret and implement the recommendations of psycho-educational assessments and other medical reports, in collaboration with students to determine the appropriate course of action to support their learning needs and outcomes.
  • Provide and facilitate training on assistive technology to students where the functional assessment of disability training-related need, is indicated.
  • Provide faculty with training and support on incorporating strategies in the classroom and studio to support learners with various needs.
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning to support the knowledge acquisition and adoption of best practices among faculty and instructors.
  • Work in cooperation with the Financial Aid and Award Specialist to assist students with disabilities in obtaining and providing documentation of disabilities to submit to for student loan applications.
  • Assist students with grant applications to provincial funding bodies.
  • Act as a resource to the University on student learning, techniques and approaches to cognitive and learning methods.
  • Conduct environmental scans, and research of the literature to ensure service delivery and support reflects current best practices that meet or exceed industry standards.
  • Observe strict confidentiality guidelines for the collection, use and maintenance of personal information of students with disabilities and protect said information against unauthorized access, collection, use, disclosure, and disposal.

What you'll need

Qualifications

Post-graduate university degree in Education, Adult Education, Occupational Therapy, or related discipline is required. Special Education or Inclusive Education designation is strongly encouraged. Lived experience with disability is considered an asset. Minimum of two (2) years related experience working in the post-secondary setting with students living with a disability is required. Deepened understanding of the implications that disabilities have on an individual's ability to function in an academic setting and a willingness to advocate for students, as necessary. Proven experience as a learning strategist in a university setting is an asset. Experienced working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools and JaneApp software are essential. Exceptional interpersonal, oral, written communication and soft skills are required.
