What you'll do
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Program Director, SEATAC, you will provide technical assistance for projects led by SEATAC staff. This involves assisting with day-to-day operations of projects to meet client research and development (R&D) objectives and commitments to collaborating with partners and funding agencies. On a daily basis, you may be working on one or more research projects. You will conduct fieldwork in support of experimental development activities, which will be conducted in both indoor and outdoor working environments. Outside field assignments may be either ashore or at sea. Innovative and committed to life-long learning, you are a creative self-starter with a commitment to R&D excellence.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:
The minimum educational qualification for this position is a diploma, advanced diploma and/or a degree in oceans technology, marine biology, oceanography and/or other marine science or engineering fields.
In addition, you have successfully completed training and hold certifications in the operation of small vessels up to 15 gross tonnage or 12 meters overall length, marine emergency responses, marine small crane and winch operation, and general marine safety. First aid training and certification would be considered assets.
You have a minimum of two years (full-time equivalent) of recent and related occupational experience in a research environment which includes fieldwork. This includes recent and related occupational experience in an ocean-related R&D, product development, prototyping, or other experimental development environment, including fieldwork conducted at sea, or equivalent experience involving the use of small marine vessels.
Experience working with industry partners to complete a project on time and on budget.
Occupational experience that includes operation of the following equipment: small boats; Remotely Operated [underwater] Vehicles (ROVs); Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS); underwater cameras; and other oceanographic instruments, would be considered assets.
You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite and e-mail.You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work.

You are known for your problem solving and critical thinking skills.
You are a strong communicator.
You possess excellent coordination skills specifically related to organization and logistics of R&D fieldwork at sea.
You have proven records and information management skills and abilities specifically related to small vessel operations.
You have strong project management skills.
You are dedicated to life-long learning about the marine environment.
