What you will be doing…

Organizational Development strives to build the collective capacity of our most valuable resource - our employees - to position us for success in achieving our mission and stewarding College interests now and in the future. We provide Human Resources, Labour Relations, Pay and Benefits and Organizational Learning services and programs to all employees across NSCC. The Learning Experience Designer works as part of the Organizational Learning team to provide professional development experiences for employees. If you strive to enhance the learner experience, seek to understand learner expectations to provide effective instructional methods, and create innovative learning experiences that are interactive, engaging and personalized, this might be the opportunity for you.

The Learning Experience Designer will design innovative learning solutions for employees that incorporate the assessment, design, evaluation, and sustainment. This may include learning experience design (LXD) and instructional design principles, content creation, graphic design, and multimedia development. You will conduct research on the latest instructional design trends, technologies, and theories to identify new approaches that could be applied to current projects. You will develop interactives, games, and other activities that will engage participants and encourage them to learn new skills. You will use a variety of modalities and technologies including eLearning, virtual instructor-led, and performance support resources (e.g., job aids, process guides, self-directed learning paths). You will work independently as well as collaboratively with cross-functional teams of subject matter experts to develop, implement, and evaluate online and blended learning experiences for employees.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is an undergraduate degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology or Education or equivalent, and related professional certification and/or experience. Degree in instructional design, instructional technology or education is preferred with at least 2 years' experience working in the instructional technology field.
  • Master's degree in a field related to education would be considered an asset.
  • You have a minimum of 5 years of recent and related occupational experience that includes experience in the following areas:
    • 2 years working in online/blended learning.
    • 3 years working in (program-level) curriculum and (course-level) instructional design.
  • You have experience and competence in leading multiple projects, balancing competing priorities and tight deadlines, and managing multiple stakeholders.
  • You have experience and/or education on the topic of competency-based education and assessment.
  • Experience teaching and/or facilitating learning would be considered an asset.
  • You have the following technology skills:
    • Advanced knowledge of Learning Management systems.
    • Intermediate to advanced skills in the use of the Brightspace learning platform to design and develop online courses and workshops.
    • Intermediate to advanced skills in using web and media-based technologies for education including but not limited to: Genially, Padlet, Canva, Streams, YouTube, Camtasia, Articulate 360, Adobe c\Creative Suite, and HTML5.
    • Intermediate to advanced skills in the use of Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, MS Teams, and Macintosh applications.
    • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional learner experience.

Relevant Skills and Knowledge

  • You use LXD and instructional design methodologies and techniques to design and develop learning solutions to meet diverse employee learning needs (utilizing various media including instructor-led training, e-learning workshops/courses, and blended learning solutions). Primary tools for eLearning development are Brightspace and Articulate 360.
  • You design, develop, and maintain learning content and materials.
  • You work with subject matter experts (SME) to ensure content is accurate and reflects current processes.
  • You demonstrate knowledge of adult learning principles and a variety of design and development principles and methodologies, including experience with online and face-to-face facilitation.
  • You ensure all digital learning deliverables meet College technology standards and accessibility requirements.
  • You demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion and have knowledge and an appreciation of universal design for learning and other accessibility principles.
  • You have practical and theoretical knowledge in designing and developing eLearning and digital learning solutions using industry-standard authoring tools (Storyline and Camtasia preferred)
  • You demonstrate a thorough knowledge of developing storyboards for creation of eLearning programs, courses and workshops.
  • You demonstrate:
    • Strong verbal communication skills, capable of writing and editing course-related materials on various platforms
    • Ability to act independently within defined objectives and direction
    • Flexibility to adapt to a variety of tasks and functions and changing priorities
    • Excellent analytical, planning, prioritization, time management, project management and organizational skills
    • Ability to work energetically and creatively in a team environment
