Salary range: $47,086.15 to $57,731.63 annually

For the 2021-22 Academic Year, based on public health guidelines, NSCC plans to return to more in-person learning, supports and services. You may be required to work on campus, remotely or a combination of both as the Academic Year begins and progresses. This will be clarified further upon hire.

What you will be doing…

Reporting to the Research Scientist - Environment and Agriculture Technology, as well as working in a team environment, the primary role of the Research Associate is to develop and manage applied research related to growing sweetgrass (Hierochloe odorata L or Anthoxanthum nitens) in a small scale (raised beds) agricultural setting, while working collaboratively with The Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq and The Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources. As part of the position, the Research Associate will be involved in planting and growing sweetgrass under different nutrient and irrigation conditions, as well as conducting field measurements. In addition, the Research Associate will provide technical assistance for projects led by the Research Scientists. This involves assisting with day-to-day operations of a project to meet the research objectives and commitments with collaborating partners and funding agencies. On a daily basis, you may be working on one or more research projects. This position may conduct fieldwork in support of data acquisition missions which may require both indoor and outside working environments. Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is an advanced diploma and/or a degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Plant and/or Soil science or related field
  • You have a minimum of two years (full time equivalent) of recent and related occupational experience in a research environment which includes fieldwork.
  • Occupational experience that includes crop management, crop sampling, soil sampling, and nutrient analysis, as well as running pot to plot level field experiments would be considered an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-maill
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work
  • Experience in training/facilitation preparation, delivery and evaluation would be considered an asset
  • Experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students would be considered an asset
