Salary range: $58,495.87.85 to $70,225.64 annually

The salary scale for Professional Support 3 is based on twelve steps that range from $58,495.87 - $81,778.09. New Professional Support may receive up to a maximum of seven steps for relevant occupational experience which is $70,225.64 annually

With the 2020/2021 Academic year primarily offered online, this position may be required to work remotely, onsite, or a combination of both. Specifics to be confirmed upon hire.

Responsibilities

What you will be doing…

You will be helping students make decisions, solve problems, and meet goals that maximize their college experience. You will work to engage and support a caseload of students - including prospective, transitioning-in, current, and transitioning-out students. You will also provide culturally relevant services and supports for African Canadian students. These cultural supports are informed by student development theory, adult education principles, in-depth knowledge of African Canadian history and experience, as well as an understanding of afri-centric teaching and learning principles. You will support other Student Services and Campus staff in developing awareness and skills in working with students in a culturally inclusive environment.

You will be planning and delivering events, activities, and interactions which support student growth, engagement, and leadership both remotely and in person. You will be advising students in areas of Accessibility, Career, Enrolment, Finance, Learning, Student Life, and Wellness.

For example, you will:

  • Help students to explore, set and meet academic and personal goals for their College experience
  • Provide opportunities for students to explore career and employment options;
  • Help students make decisions about academic enrolment, options, and policies;
  • Assist students in planning how to meet their financial commitments to the college;
  • Use recreational, cultural, and social events and activities to engage students.

You will be a member of campus and provincial Student Services and Advising teams, that provide a continuum of integrated services and opportunities to students in-person, online and in blended environments. You will initiate and build partnerships with Academic Chairs and Faculty in order to provide services tailored to the unique needs and opportunities of students and programs.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is an undergraduate degree. A degree focused in Student Affairs, African Canadian or Indigenous Studies, Adult Education, Education, or Social Science majors would be considered an asset.
  • You have a minimum of three years (full time equivalent) of recent and relevant occupational experience in post-secondary student services and affairs, career development, adult education and service delivery in African Canadian settings.
  • Occupational experience that includes working with African Canadian students; building strong collaborative relationships with external organizations connected with African Canadian education; or working with African Canadian training and funding/sponsoring agencies, would be an considered asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams. Experience using database applications such as PeopleSoft, LAMPS, or Banner would be considered an asset. You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience
  • You have experience in training/facilitation preparation, delivery and evaluation and experience in coordinating and facilitating workshops and services in person and in a remote setting.
  • You have experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students

As a condition of employment, Professional Support employees at NSCC must complete a two-year (part-time) adult education program delivered by NSCC. This adult education program is a significant investment on the part of NSCC in the learning and development of new employees.
