What you'll be doing…

As an integral part of Student Services, you will be part of a team that provides the first line of contact and service-delivery for all students at the Akerley Campus who are experiencing personal, social or academic difficulties. Focusing primarily on personal counselling, you will serve as a source of information relating to wellness, mental health, career development, and physical well-being. You will also refer students to other services and resources within the College or in the community, as appropriate.

You will create resources and deliver and/or coordinate group sessions and workshops on a wide range of wellness and personal management topics, to aid students in adjusting to college life and becoming successful learners. In addition to providing brief, solution-focused counselling to students, you will provide leadership and support regarding critical incidents involving the entire campus community. As part of the Student Services team, you will participate in, or at times lead, the organization of campus events, activities, or committees that contribute to the distinctive student experience, such as Orientation, Wellness Week, and Convocation. This position reports to the Manager, Student Services under the functional guidance of the Manager of Counselling and Wellness.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a Maters of Education in Counselling; Masters of Social Work; or Masters of Sociology/Humanities, Counselling. In addition, you must be registered (or undergoing the candidacy process to become registered) with one of the following regulatory bodies: Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists, or the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers.
  • You have a minimum of five (5) years post-counselling credential occupational experience counselling adults in a variety of areas such as academic, career and personal counselling, and working with post-secondary and/or secondary students. Note that your five (5) years of occupational experience must be after you received your Masters degree.
  • Recent graduates with a Masters of Education in Counselling or a Masters of Social Work degree program with a focus on Africentricity/Anti-oppressive framework will be considered.
  • Occupational experience: counselling adults from diverse populations; counselling within a post-secondary institution; or supervising counselling practicums would be considered assets.
  • You are familiar and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook. Experience with PeopleSoft would be considered an asset.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience.
  • Experience with group facilitation through delivery of workshops or other support groups would be considered an asset.

  • You have proven records and information management skills and abilities and are comfortable using technology to record case notes.
  • You are dedicated to lifelong learning and look to improve your skills and knowledge in the area of counselling.

As a condition of employment, Professional Support employees at NSCC must complete a two-year (part-time) adult education program delivered by NSCC. This adult education program is a significant investment on the part of NSCC in the learning and development of new employees. To achieve regular status; all probationary, full or part-time Professional Support employees of the College must successfully complete the program within their probationary period. Term full-time Professional Support employees whose term appointment is twelve or more months are also required to participate in this program.
