What you'll do

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for a variety of project design and design review activities within the Central Facilities and Engineering Department of NSCC. The Environmental Engineer will direct renovation and construction projects, as well as support multiple initiatives relating to the College's sustainability agenda as well as climate change and environmental risk management.

The Environmental Engineer's work relates to the improvement of infrastructure and sustainability performance of the College. This work, in turn, supports a healthy and inviting learning and working environment. The enhancement and maintenance of the College's sustainability agenda supports the philosophy of utilizing our campuses as a living lab and leading by example for the benefit of our learners.

The Environmental Engineer position will review and develop designs as they relate to sustainability initiatives, new construction, and renovations. You will be responsible for managing project activities including planning, design, construction, budget and project documentation as well as the management of LEED certification processes for new construction. You will assist in the completion of facility condition assessments and complete these assessments in terms of energy efficiency, building codes, best practices, and accessibility standards. You will work with a team to develop and implement sustainability plans for the College. This includes goal setting, strategy development, reporting, and sustainability certification maintenance. This position will assist with the development and implementation of the College's Climate Change Action Plan. The Environmental Engineer will work with their team to assess, manage and report environmental risks (e.g. hazardous building materials, indoor air quality, Legionella, water quality, etc.). You will act as an engineering mentor to future co-op students. You will actively engage stakeholders at all levels including executive, managers, consultants, and contractors through individual contact, group meetings and committees. The Environmental Engineer is also responsible for the management and coordination of budgets as they relate to various capital projects and/or consulting services.

In this position, you will dual report to both the Director, Facilities and Engineering and the Manager, Infrastructure, Sustainability and Space Planning.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

* The minimum educational qualification for this position is a Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental), with designation as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Engineer in Training (EIT) with career path to achieve P.Eng. within 12 months. In addition, you possess Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and are certified as a LEED Accredited Professional (AP).

* You have a minimum of 3 years of recent and related occupational experience preferably in a post-secondary environment.

* You have specific experience in construction management and environmental risk management.

* You have experience in managing the LEED process for new construction.

* You possess experience in sustainability certification platforms, such as Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating Systems (STARS) and/or BOMA BEST.

* You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite and E-mail.

* You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience.
