Responsibilities

The Manager, Applied Research Services is responsible for the organization and development of NSCC institutional research projects and processes within Applied Research. You will apply a project management approach to a diverse range of student, faculty and staff research projects, and support the NSCC mission of working with industry and community partners to develop Nova Scotia's economy and quality of life.

As the lead for the Applied Research Office, the Manager Applied Research Services provides research oversight, from pre-award to post-award processes, with a strong focus on financial management. The position oversees the administrative, contract, and grant funding activity for NSCC Applied Research. The role involves managing multiple projects, meeting tight deadlines, and providing research administration guidance to the team, to help deliver projects on time and on budget. The Manager supports research-related activity at NSCC, including formulating and writing proposals, planning and management of research projects, report preparation, public event coordination, and representing NSCC Applied Research to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The Manager also assists in interpreting and implementing regulatory guidelines, serving as the NSCC Research Ethics Board (REB) liaison, coordinating aspects of REB function, and ensuring compliance with regulations from external granting agencies, such as the Tri-Council Policy on ethical conduct for research involving humans (TCPS 2).

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a Bachelor's Degree in relevant area related to research administration, such as Business Administration, Management, Commerce or another related field.
  • You have a minimum of five years of recent and related occupational experience in preparing and/or reviewing financial reports to reconcile to a detailed trial balance and comply with expense eligibility guidelines.
  • Experience with financial management, accounting and reporting.
  • Experience with an operating budget, and providing forecasting feedback
  • Experience writing and reviewing proposals. You have specific experience in providing leadership to direct reports, providing support, direction, feedback and development for proposals on an ongoing basis.
  • Experience in a post-secondary institution, or similar research environment, in reviewing and interpreting contracts/agreements to provide feedback on content.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Outlook and Excel, as well as recent experience and proficiency with computerized accounting and other business software.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience
  • Occupational experience that includes experience in research funding mechanisms and procedures would be considered an asset, as would experience working within a granting agency.
  • Experience dealing with Research Ethics would be considered an asset.

  • You have specific technical occupational knowledge and skill in budgeting and cost allocation for research activities in a post-secondary environment
