MI'KMAQ-WOLASTOQEY CENTRE

The Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre (MWC) is located on Wolastoqiyik traditional territory, at the University of New Brunswick. MWC is an autonomous academic unit within the Faculty of Education that offers a variety of educational programs, provides supportive services to Indigenous students, and provides educational opportunities to everyone who wants to learn about Wabanaki histories, cultures, contributions, and treaty rights through principles of respect, sharing, harmony, acceptance, and unity.

Salary Range: $48,688 - $60,860 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to Nihkanatpat (Director) of MWC, the Coordinator of Wabanaki Education oversees all aspects of the WBEd program including: program application and admissions, course roll-out, recruiting and hiring of instructors, providing direct academic advising, giving online, personal, and cultural support to WBEd students.

  • Advise WBEd students on course selection and program options according to their goals, individually and in group advising sessions.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with students at the beginning and end of each term.
  • Identify and support students in crises, personal or academic, and provide appropriate options on campus or in Wabanaki communities.
  • Understand cultural norms and practices and ensure that students are supported in times of bereavement, illness, or other life events.
  • Advise students on UNB policies and procedures as needed, acting as a liaison between Wabanaki communities/schools/teachers/students and the university.
  • Oversee the application and admissions process for each enrollment.
  • Complete program audits for students to confirm that they are on track for program completion.
  • Assess student transcripts from other post-secondary institutions for transfer credits.
  • Coordinate with MWC and the Associate Dean about creating elective courses to use toward increased teacher certification level and to meet unique and stated needs of educators in today's schools.
  • Coordinate, plan, and participate in Orientation at the beginning of the program in August.
  • Coordinate, plan, and participate in the traditional graduation at the end of the program in June.
  • Oversee the post-graduation Diploma program for students who wish to take extra courses toward increased teacher certification.
  • Initiate program reviews and updates in collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ensure that the WBEd program maintains rigorous academic standards while being culturally responsive, and embedded within Wabanaki languages, communities, histories, teachings, ways of knowing, and cultures.
  • Promote and implement UNDRIP and Truth and Reconciliation calls to action within the program.
  • Recruit and coordinate hiring of instructors with Wabanaki knowledge, culture, history, experience in schools as well as teaching in an education program.
  • Participate in Wabanaki community engagement sessions.
  • Apply to funding agencies to help support experiential education opportunities for students.
  • Monitor the Wabanaki BEd account and keep records of expenditures.
  • Collaborate with funding departments within UNB as well as with Wabanaki community sponsors to help ensure that students have the financial support they need.
  • Compile and maintain statistical information on management programs.
  • Operate and maintain effective advising and registration systems for WBEd students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • A University Degree in Education, Wabanaki or Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
  • Experience with academic advising, UNB policies and procedures, Wabanaki Education.
  • Preference will be given to a qualified applicant who is Indigenous and preferably Wabanaki.

Additional Strengths

  • A Master's Degree in Education, Wabanaki or Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in program coordinating and program development is considered an asset.
  • Training in trauma-invested practices, cultural competency, effects of colonial history and practices, and mental health first-aid is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to use online learning technologies and platforms such as D2L, Zoom, and Teams.
