Nanocomposites and Mechanics Laboratory (Mechanical Engineering)

UNB's Nanocomposites and Mechanics Laboratory (NCM Lab) is located in the Mechanical Engineering department of the Faculty of Engineering. Guided by the core principle of delivering world-class engineering education leveraged with cutting-edge fundamental and applied research in materials science & engineering, advanced manufacturing, robotics & control, fluids & heat transfer, biomedical, and bioengineering, the department is the house of the Canadian Alliance for Cold Spray Technology (CACST), a unique research facility in Canada. The lab actively engages in collaborative partnerships with universities, industries, research organizations, and not-for-profits to support training undergraduate & graduate research students, postdoctoral fellows, and research professionals.

Salary Range: $51,924 - $67,489 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director of the Nanocomposites and Mechanics Laboratory, The Lab Operational Manager works closely with the director of the lab on a mission to fulfill the research equipment operational needs in a safe and secure environment, along the way supporting day-to-day experimental scheduling of the infrastructure to accomplish both academic research and industry project demands.

  • Ensure safe and scheduled operation of three primary infrastructure technologies located at the UNB COREHub.
  • Miaintain high-pressure cold spray (HPCS); high-velocity oxy-fuel (HV0F); and nanostructured powder manufacturing technology, including high-energy mechanical alloying and gas atomizer.
  • Assist the lab director in developing the standard operating protocols (SOP) of all operational equipment and procedures.
  • Manage consumables/inventory to support equipment operations on time.
  • Participate in professional, occupational, upgrading, and training as needed.
  • Provide training and support to students/researchers, shop-floor technicians.
  • Assist in controlling operational hazards related to powder manufacturing and component development.
  • Learn and implement software programs for robot operation.
  • Complete operational maintenance, predictive measures, and timely calibration of the infrastructure.
  • Liaise with the UNB Facilities Management (FM) office to ensure operations of supporting infrastructure.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the monthly hazardous waste disposal of residual powders and other materials.
  • Provide input knowledge to the lab director regarding ongoing challenges with fundamental thesis projects and industry projects, whereby the goal is to resolve them on time.
  • Transfer supporting knowledge dissemination to scientific communities (including researchers, students, UNB staff).
  • Other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post Secondary Education in trades or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working in a research laboratory environment or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.

Additional Strengths

  • Experience with facility infrastructure management with oversight of construction and health and safety would be considered an asset.
  • Prior collaboration experience with industry would be considered an asset.
  • Background in coatings deposition technologies, materials science, and research and development projects would be considered an asset.
  • A strong technical aptitude.
  • Ability to stay up to date with industry trends/concepts and investigative procedures.
