Department of Biology

The Department of Biology has 29 professors (21 research, 2 visiting, 6 teaching), 10 scientific technicians, 2 secretarial staff and 99 students (77 graduate, 12 honors). The department offers 161 courses (125 undergraduate, 36 graduate) annually.

Salary Range: $49,555 - $64,425 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Chair of Biology, this position provides direct technical support for multiple labs in two of the teaching groups and back up support for others. This position will also be the Chemical Safety Handling Officer and Chair of the Biology Safety Committee, this position works closely with the Departmental Chair and Environmental Health and Safety officers to ensure safety regulations are being met with regards to shipping, handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.

  • Prepares all the chemical solutions, reagents and consumables for biochemistry teaching labs and ensures that they will work properly for the students.
  • Works through all the laboratory protocols in advance to ensure proper functioning of the laboratory exercises and troubleshoots as necessary to ensure the best results for the students.
  • Inventories and orders supply and equipment for courses on an ongoing basis to ensure they are on hand when needed and that there are no delays.
  • Responsible for developing and testing the potential experimental protocol for use in an undergraduate teaching lab to ensure it is not only replicable, but also delivers the desired learning outcomes.
  • Routinely inspect and calibrate all electrical and mechanical equipment, as well as glassware and other laboratory supplies.
  • Consults with the UNB Director of Environmental Health and Safety on best practices regarding chemical use and disposal in Biology by adhering to University, Provincial and Federal codes and regulations.
  • Arrange for the safe removal of hazardous or restricted materials produced in the Department.
  • Instruct faculty, students and staff in the area of hazardous chemicals and provides site-specific departmental training in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • Hire, train and supervise part-time undergraduate student glassware cleaning personnel.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Master's in biology, specialization in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, or other related fields.
  • Certification in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • Experience working in Containment Level (CL)1 and/or CL2 laboratories.
  • 3 to 5 years related experience working is a research, private sector of teaching laboratory.
  • 1 year of experience calibrating and maintaining basic laboratory equipment.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Additional Strengths

  • Experience working with groups of students in laboratory conditions would be an asset.
  • Biological Safety Training certification would be an asset.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG; ground/air) certification would be an asset.
  • First aid/CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) certification would be an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, excellent organization and prioritizing skills.
  • Self-motivated and thorough understanding of molecular and biochemical techniques.
  • Fully versed in microbiological protocols and techniques to successfully prepare the student labs.
  • Lab-oriented math skills.
  • Ability to work independently, but also as part of a team.
