Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre

The Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre (MWC), located on traditional territory of Wolastoqiyik at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus, provides a learning environment for Indigenous students to develop a strong cultural foundation as well as academic and professional skills. MWC offers opportunities for all UNB students and faculty to become familiar with Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqey histories, cultures, contributions and treaty tights through principles of respect, sharing, harmony, acceptance and unity in diversity.

Salary Range: $47,992 - $62,389 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director of the Mi'kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre, the Coordinator of Wabanaki Language Revival coordinates and implements numerous critical language revitalization efforts including, but not limited to, language nests, language camps for students and communities, and a Wabanaki Language gathering.

  • Coordinate meetings and materials to support the directive of the Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqey Language Strategy as identified by the Wabanaki Language Committee.
  • Conduct reviews of Indigenous Language immersion programs in Wabanaki communities.
  • Work with Elders and Language Keepers to develop a diverse understanding and best language practices.
  • Design, plan, and facilitate program activities to engage with Indigenous communities.
  • Analyze language data and prepare/report key findings.
  • Create, organize, and facilitate the annual Wabanaki Language Gathering.
  • Create opportunities for UNB students to present research, publications, and presentations about language revival strategies, planning, and policy best practices for language revival.
  • Develop language resources, Language Modules, literature reviews, and annotated bibliographies.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • A University Degree in Indigenous Studies, Language, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of related experience.

Additional Strengths

  • Fluency in one of the Wabanaki Languages is considered a strong asset.
  • Graduation from an accredited Wabanaki language program is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Wabanaki Language systems, ceremonies, and traditions.
  • Knowledge in the areas of Indigenous language, linguistics & Indigenous studies.
  • Ability to negotiate various world views and knowledge systems with professionalism.
