Reporting to the Assistant Chief Engineer, the Shift Engineer is accountable for the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems used to provide Heat, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) in the Halifax Convention Centre (HCC) and Scotiabank Centre (SBC).

Key Responsibilities

  • Building Control Systems - Programming Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and lighting control computer to satisfy the day-to-day event and operational needs, through the Honeywell EBI computerized system.
  • Respond promptly to all service requests.
  • Direct outside contractors as required.
  • Operate and maintain the ammonia ice plant.
  • Operating and maintaining boilers and cooling towers.
  • Complete preventive maintenance work orders as required to include, but not be limited to filtration system changes, greasing and oiling of motors, gears, etc., inspection and adjustment of belts and pulleys, replacement of motor bearings, alignment of shafts, boiler tube cleaning, and related building fixtures and equipment repairs.
  • Shift Operations - Checking all mechanical equipment i.e. controls, gauges, valves, and other components to assure continuous heat, hot water, air conditioning and ice temperatures; ensure the plant is operating safely and efficiently.
  • Daily inspection of mechanical and electrical rooms and general housekeeping of same.
  • First call to repair kitchen equipment.
  • Maintenance on plumbing components.
  • Maintenance of motor driven entrance systems such as roll up doors and sliding door.
  • Performing the physical duties required to correct emergency conditions such as sewer back-ups, water flooding into building office space, and related incidents.
  • Weekly measuring and recording of water treatment chemical levels; add chemicals as required.
  • To be fully conversant with building emergency operations procedures.
  • Weekly test & inspection of fire pump.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in successfully dealing with stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated ability as a member of high performing units and teams.
  • Ability to work flexible hours supporting events including evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Proven ability to listen effectively and to follow instructions.
  • Proven ability to speak effectively and to provide clear feedback.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Training/experience in planning work activities an asset.
  • Emergency or Standard First Aid training an asset.

Education & Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in physical plant operations.
  • 1st or 2nd class Refrigeration Plant Operator - Stationary Engineer.

Created as part of a government partnership between the Province of Nova Scotia and Halifax Regional Municipality, we work in collaboration with them to manage our business in a responsible and transparent manner.

We were established in 2014 through legislation to operate, maintain and manage the activities of the Halifax Convention Centre in a manner that will promote and develop economic development, tourism and industry in the Province generally, and the Municipality.

Effective April 1, 2017, our mandate expanded to include the continued management and operations of Scotiabank Centre and Ticket Atlantic, formerly under Trade Centre Limited (TCL).
