What you will be doing…

Reporting to the Academic Chair, Civil & Building Technologies, and under the direct supervision of the program faculty, you will provide laboratory/shop, program, and administrative support primarily for the Civil Engineering Technology program and other programs in the department. You will maintain and manage the lab environment, equipment preparation for surveying and geotechnical/civil materials lab, and maintenance of the inventory system for lab/shop supplies. Additionally, you will assist with lab and equipment demonstrations in the areas of surveying with a total station; provide administrative preparation for the lab/shop, assist with technology needs, including 2D and 3D CAD; and work directly with students, faculty, and staff in a laboratory/shop setting. You will also assist in classroom and lab/shop demonstrations and prepare projects and mock-ups in advance of the need. You will assist faculty with the safe operation of tools and equipment and safe work practices.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a relevant post-secondary diploma or certification in Civil Engineering Technology, or other Construction Technology discipline at a Technologist level.
  • In addition, you possess training in WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety regulations as well as Standard First Aid, CPR, and discipline-relevant safety training or are willing to obtain within the first year.
  • You have a minimum of five years (full-time equivalent) of recent and related occupational experience in the construction industry.
  • You have experience with modern surveying methods and are proficient in surveying using a total station.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology in the construction industry including Building Information Modelling (BIM), and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work.
  • You are a strong user of AutoCAD and Civil 3D. Experience with Revit including Revit Structure is considered an asset.
  • You have experience maintaining equipment and implementing safety policies, practices and procedures associated with the safe operation of tools/equipment and safe work practices.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail, and Excel.
  • Training and/or occupational experience that includes materials testing in a Civil Materials Lab is considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students is considered an asset.
  • Experience with inventory control associated with hardware, software and electronic media is considered an asset
