Atlantic Lottery (AL) is seeking a Legal Counsel. Location is flexible within Atlantic Canada with occasional travel to Moncton, NB.

As our Legal Counsel, you will work with and report to our General Counsel supporting AL's ongoing business by providing legal advice and guidance on a broad spectrum of legal matters which affect the Corporation arising from its operations, corporate status, and plans, including corporate and commercial, contract and public procurement, regulatory, privacy, Canada's anti-spam legislation (CASL), Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) and employment matters.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Provides practical legal advice to all business units on a wide variety of matters to advance the corporation's objectives and resolve legal issues and risks as they arise.
  • Proactively identifies and evaluates a variety of legal issues regarding business initiatives and develops and recommends practical solutions to achieve business objectives.
  • Exercises significant discretion and decision-making autonomy in working with the business.
  • Supports the resolution of pending or threatened disputes between AL and third parties. Assesses and coordinates management of litigation and provides instructions to external counsel as required.
  • May support the resolution of pending or threatened disputes by preparing submissions and attending hearings.
  • Develops and implements mitigation strategies to reduce impact of AL exposure to legal risks.
  • Consults and advises senior management, the Executive and Board on confidential and sensitive legal matters.
  • Establishes and maintains excellent communications and working relationships within AL to ensure that legal advice is sought by internal clients when needed and provided to external stakeholders, as required.

What we can expect from you:

  • Ability to handle a diverse range of issues and responsibilities in a professional and collaborative manner.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization in writing and in person, in both formal and informal settings.
  • Work independently with representatives of AL's shareholders with respect to litigation, legislative and regulatory matters.
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to identify potential issues and risks and craft solutions.
  • A proven understanding of the business priorities to be in position to address legal needs of the organization.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a dynamic and changing environment.

You should apply if you have the following:

  • Law degree and a current member in good standing of the Law Society of New Brunswick
  • 5-7 years' experience practicing law in private practice, in-house, or government in a corporate/commercial environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Awesome if you had:

  • Experience in the following areas: regulatory, privacy, government procurement law and contracts, litigation (including managing), CASL, FINTRAC, employment law.
  • Experience with gaming or other regulated industry.
