Atlantic Lottery (AL) is seeking a Chief Strategy Officer. Location is head office in Moncton, NB or one of our regional offices in Halifax, NS or St. John's, NL.

As the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) you will be responsible for formalizing AL's strategic planning processes, forging new working relationships and synergies across the organization and into our key stakeholders, and assessing whether strategic initiatives, at all levels of the organization, are in line with the company's standards and objectives. Recognizing that strategy development has become a continuous, not periodic, process, you will also be accountable for successful execution which will depend on rapid and effective decision making. You will clarify the strategy for every business unit and function, ensuring that all employees understand the details of the strategic plan and how their work connects to corporate goals. You will also ensure that the members of the Executive Team and broader senior leadership team come to an agreement on strategy decisions commensurate with the permission space this position is accountable to establish with our Shareholders.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Corporate Long-Term Strategy: Principally responsible for the leadership and oversight of the corporate strategy development and delivery, together with the Executive Team. You will recommend the longer-term direction for the corporation, with respect to matters with a multi-departmental scope and will share in the responsibility for delivering on the goals as set in the corporation's Strategic Plan, Annual Business Plan, and the Corporate Balanced Scorecard. You will be accountable for constructing strategy and oversight of operations supporting the corporation's broadest goals of achieving responsibly generated sustainable growth in profit, expanding its known player franchise, and operating the enterprise under a competitive cost structure.

Stakeholder Engagement: Responsible for the development and deployment of strategic stakeholder engagement plans to further the company's commercial interests by building strong working relationships with senior levels of government and leveraging your extensive network and experience. You will support the CEO in communicating the narrative with key shareholders and stakeholders. Supported by the CEO and the Director of Public Affairs, you maintain an active presence in all four provincial capitals.

Enterprise Leadership: As a member of the Executive Team, you have shared accountability for enterprise leadership. You will contribute to strategy and operational leadership on matters related to all aspects of AL operations. In addition to ownership of the strategic plan, you will be jointly accountable for the identification and implementation of corporate strategies, plans and actions required to achieve the vision, as well as financial and operational goals of the division. You will provide counsel and leadership to the Executive Team on matters related to their areas of primary responsibility. Also acts as the corporate spokesperson on matters pertaining to strategic initiatives that involve material market-facing changes to the gaming landscape in Atlantic Canada.

  • Advanced business acumen and intellectual capacity - strategic and holistic thinker and creative problem solver that can translate analysis into a clear and compelling vision.
  • Highly advanced interpersonal skills - particularly relationship and trust building.
  • Communications skills - the ability to translate complex issues into something that can resonate with an audience in order to get their buy-in. The CSO must be comfortable through all levels of the organization - at 50,000 feet, 500 feet, 50 feet, and on down. They must be able to tell the strategy story in a way people can understand and buy in to which requires a blend of practical and analytical as well as visionary.
  • Advanced diplomacy skills, persuasion and networking desire and skills. The CSO must be adept at the ability to influence others and to exerting their influence on other executives and a wide variety of external stakeholders.
  • Adept at interpreting market shifts and trends into threats and opportunities for strategic response.
  • Highly advanced candor and tact are needed to challenge thinking and discuss the subjects no one else wants to touch so that these issues no longer serve as barriers to agreement and action.
  • Ability to steer the top team away from group think and from focusing too much on past practices and accomplishments.
  • Acts as a change leader.

You should apply if you have the following:

  • Post Secondary Education with a focus on business and or public administration.
  • Minimum of 15 years acting in a senior capacity within complex organizations managing key stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience with analysis of strategic options, scenario planning strategic planning and business development.
