The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Saint Mary's University invites applications for an eight-month, full-time, limited-term appointment at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor in Geography, effective September 1, 2020. We are seeking an individual with a demonstrated record of effectiveness in university teaching to prepare and deliver the following single-semester courses (each weighted at 3 credit hours and 0.5 FCEs).

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies is a dynamic and collegial unit of seven full-time faculty members, supported by a cartographer and a geomatics technician. The Department offers majors in both the BA and BSc degree programs and oversees the Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) degree program. We also offer an MA degree in Geography and faculty can also supervise students in the Masters of Applied Science and the Masters of Atlantic Canada Studies programs. The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies plays a foundational role in the School of the Environment, the hub for environmental education, research and outreach at Saint Mary's University (https://smu.ca/academics/school-of-the-environment.html).

Responsibilities

Fall 2020

Two sections of introductory Geography:

  • Either one section each of GEOG 1100 - Global Perspectives on Land and Life and GEOG 1200 - People, Place and Environment
  • Or two sections of GEOG 1200

Winter 2021

  • GEOG 3380 - Climate Change: Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation
  • GEOG 4424 [ENVS 4450] - Natural Resource Management
  • One of:
    • GEOG 2312 - Urban Geography
    • GEOG 3321 - Spatial Processes of Economic Globalization

What you'll need

Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a PhD, or have attained ABD status, in Geography, Environmental Studies, or a cognate discipline. We are particularly interested in candidates who can enhance experiential learning and innovation within the classroom and who can support and promote student research at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Finally, the successful candidate will be expected to fulfill department, faculty, university and community service commitments as needs arise.
