Position: Maintenance Assistant (NSGEU Local 170)

Hours of Work: Rotating Shift

Department: Facilities Management

Salary: $20.01/hr (Probation); $20.51/hr (Permanent)

The Maintenance Assistant works under the supervision of the Manager, Maintenance and Operations or designate and at times under the direction of a Lead Trades Person. The Maintenance Assistant provides general maintenance service for minor repairs and installation of furniture, appliance repair, minor repairs and general upkeep of the buildings and grounds, which includes painting, lamp replacement, ceiling tile replacement, wall repair, window screen repair, pest control measures, grounds cleanup, and snow removal. Works collaboratively with other Facilities Management employees to ensure the timely, accurate and effective delivery of services.

Responsibilities

Duties as the Maintenance Assistant include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides general maintenance service and make minor repairs and installations to buildings and furniture, door repairs, toilets operational, light bulb/tube replacement, wall repairs, painting, window screens, and appliance repair.
  • Provides maintenance assistance to the trades and Facilities Management staff, as required.
  • Operate university vehicles, as required.
  • Provides general upkeep of University grounds, which shall include, grounds work, grounds cleanup, vegetation control and/or snow removal and salting.
  • Assists tradesperson with keys and locks.
  • Performs snow removal and ice control and maintains log.
  • Attends training sessions to keep up with technological changes in building and safety related issues.
  • Performs other duties as required

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Maintenance Assistant you will possess a technical certification or trades school certificate plus one-year experience in a building maintenance related environment. You demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment; the ability to work alone and complete tasks with minimal supervision; and the ability to take initiative in completing tasks with minimal instruction. You communicate effectively in a positive manner conveying and responding to information and interact with customers to maintain positive working relationships. You will also perform all duties in a safe manner, following health and safety legislation and all required safe work practices and procedures, in order to minimize the risk of injury and property damage. This position requires the successful candidate to be able to work shift work and be available for call-in as required.
