Position: Web Content Editor (2 Year Contract)

Department: Advancement Services- External Affairs

Annual Salary: $55,000 - $60,000 + 4% in lieu of vacation

Reporting to the Manager of Digital Experience, the Web Content Editor will identify digital content quality issues across the university's extensive website and work with content owners across the University and the web team at External Affairs to address them. This position will work with faculties and departments to produce high quality content for the university's varied audiences.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Duties as the Web Content Editor include, but are not limited to:

  • Consulting and planning with content owners to keep their respective content areas up to date, accessible and usable for primary stakeholders.
  • Using website analytics, search reports, strategic planning and internal consultation, identifying high-value content areas for review and improvement.
  • Identifying and addressing quality control issues such as wording, typos, layout, formatting, and broken links.
  • Developing and maintaining a strong understanding of the fundamentals/standards of web accessibility (WCAG standards) and how to make content (text, photo, video) accessible as required.
  • Developing and executing user testing processes.
  • Creating, implementing and delivering training initiatives and materials directed toward web authors across the university community.
  • Reviewing existing content on smu.ca and related sites to identify and address quality issues such as spelling, grammar, layout, formatting, adherence to the Saint Mary's Style Guide, branding, etc.
  • Helping develop and distribute scheduled and unscheduled mass email messages.
  • Serving as coordinator for new digital projects and initiatives, as required.
  • Researching, writing, proofreading and publishing content on Saint Mary's websites and social media channels
  • Helping develop and distribute scheduled and unscheduled mass email messages.
  • Keeping abreast of digital communication trends, especially as they apply to the higher education and marketing industries.
  • Serving as on interdepartmental committees with large scale content initiatives such as updating the Academic Calendar, producing faculty profiles, and other special web projects.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Web Content Editor you will possess a degree in Public Relations, Communications, or Journalism, with a minimum five (5) years of directly related experience. You must have web-related copy editing experience and/or training. You must demonstrate web content management system experience and understanding of web content analytics and testing principles. You have experience with image editing. You understand website usability and accessibility principles for the desktop and mobile experience. You are experienced in social media and knowledgeable of related best practices. You have a good understanding of front-end web technologies such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and database fundamentals. You have a good understanding of mass email distribution and of related anti-spam legislation. Photography, video experience considered a plus.
