Position: Security Officer (NSGEU Local 170) - 24/7 Rotating Schedule

Department:  Facilities Management

Annual Salary: $17.97/hr (Probation); $18.47 (Permanent)

Under the supervision of the Manager, University Security, the Security Officer responds to emergency calls, patrols the campus to protect people and assets and provides parking enforcement. Provides Security dispatch services on a backup emergency basis. The Security Officer enforces University policies and Provincial Laws governing the Protection of Property Act. Provides training for new security personnel and contract officers. Works collaboratively with other Facilities Management employees to ensure the timely, accurate and effective delivery of services.

Responsibilities

Duties as the University Security Officer include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting ongoing foot patrols of the University during each shift.
  • Responding to and investigating incidents, occurrences, and emergencies and providing verbal and written reports, as well as photographs to the Manager, University Security on incidents such as emergencies, assaults, break-ins, and property damage.
  • Responding to Fire Alarms as a First Response Fire Team member and becoming familiar with Fire Alarm panels and equipment location, use and procedures.
  • Responding to emergencies as the first responder and acting as site commander until relief is available by the Manager University Security.
  • Administering Medical First Aid and CPR.
  • Assisting Residence Security.
  • Responding to enquiries from the University Community, contractors, guests, and the general public.
  • Responding to Room Opening Requests from the University Community, contractors, guests, and the general public and determining the individual's authority by checking identification cards or other signed authorization and/or contacting others.
  • Maintaining a high level of professionalism in all dealings with others.
  • Providing security dispatch services on a backup emergency basis as required.
  • Performing weekly inspections of systems such as exterior security lighting, fire extinguishers, AED's, etc. and reporting any deficiencies to the Manager, University Security.
  • Performing parking enforcement.
  • Providing training for University and contract security officers.
  • Preparing and submitting work orders and repair deficiency reports and contacting Facilities Management to ensure repairs are initiated.
  • Maintaining files.
  • Issuing and collecting Security Access cards and alarm system codes and instructing owners in their use.
  • Performing special projects as required by the Manager University Security or designate.
  • Providing shift briefing to on-coming Security personnel.
  • Preparing daily Security Report for submission to the Manager, University Security and briefing the Manager on shift occurrences as required.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Security Officer you will possess a High School Diploma, a certificate from a recognized Canadian Security Program and two (2) years experience in security. You will also possess a certificate in CPR and Emergency First Aid. You demonstrate a working knowledge of computers; the ability to work in a team environment; the ability to work alone and complete tasks with minimal supervision; and the ability to take initiative in completing tasks with minimal instruction. You communicate effectively in a positive manner conveying and responding to information and interact with customers to maintain positive working relationships. You will also perform all duties in a safe manner, following health and safety legislation and all required safe work practices and procedures, in order to minimize the risk of injury and property damage.
