Position: Manager, Application Support (APC)

Department: Information Technology Systems & Support (ITSS)

Annual Salary: $69,558 - $89,642 (Group 7)

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Client Services, the Manager, Application Support provides University-wide application support and development, including web development, to faculty, administration and students. As Systems Architect, the Manager designs systems and software according to client needs and champions business solutions meeting business requirements. The Manager is further responsible for the management of enterprise applications and application support systems; database management and implementation; and development, management and maintenance of the University's web portal; maintenance of technical infrastructure supporting the University's public website.

Responsibilities

Duties as the Manager, Application Support include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising full and part-time staff as well as part-time, contract, and student employees.
  • Hiring, orientating, training and evaluating staff as well as scheduling staff hours in accordance with policy and/or collective agreement.
  • Supervising external specialists while carrying out contract work.
  • Resolving employee concerns, either directly, or through established grievance/complaint procedures.
  • Initiating disciplinary action along with recommending and justifying discharge where warranted.
  • Demonstrating fiscal responsibility through adherence to the University's financial business plan and strategies.
  • Developing standards and best practices to support systems design and implementation.
  • Designing and applying client business needs methodology and ensuring system designs adapt to emerging labour market trends.
  • Providing tools, training and guidelines on application systems.
  • Piloting and evaluating new tools and services prior to adoption.
  • Fostering a client-focused approach throughout the unit.
  • Establishing measures and criteria to evaluate solution outcomes.
  • Confirming strategic alignment of business systems, processes and strategies.
  • Developing collaborative partnerships with common goals to improve systems and reduce costs to the University.
  • Ensuring Application Support contributes value through implementation of optimal business solutions.
  • Interacting regularly with vendors to assess ongoing planning and process needs that support activities related to process improvement.
  • Adhering to Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) principles and risk management protocols in the delivery of support.
  • As systems expert, providing support and guidance for development team(s).
  • Developing protocols and guidelines related to changes for all supported systems.
  • Communicating structural changes and revisions through formal channels.
  • Planning the design and mechanisms required to manage data and information assets in accordance to data governance and best practices.
  • Developing information reporting in accordance to information reporting strategy.
  • Executing tactical plans in support of the ITSS business plan and University goals.
  • Setting annual goals and objectives to support the ITSS business plan and University goals.
  • Serving as an active member of cross-department and cross-University working groups, committees and projects.
  • Establishing prioritized project plans, on a periodic basis, as a standalone project manager and in conjunction with the Assistant Director, Client Services, and facilitated by the Manager of Planning and Projects.
  • Meeting regularly with unit staff and clients to evaluate, revise and measure accomplishment of annual goals and objectives, in addition to project goals and objectives.
  • Participating in ITSS Quality Improvement/Risk Management projects to improve procedures and work flow.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Manager, Application Support you will possess an undergraduate degree and a minimum three (3) years directly related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. You will also have demonstrated supervisory experience preferably in a unionized environment and the ability to lead a team of IT Specialists and working under deadlines. You further demonstrate strong organizational skills; the ability to work in a fast-paced, team oriented environment; and the ability to lead a team through a creative process. Knowledge and experience in application development and support is required. Experience/training in project management; knowledge of ITIL; knowledge of Ellucian Banner, Luminis Portal and Web CMS applications; and knowledge and experience in Oracle, SQL, JAVA, Groovy, Grails, Tomcat, .NET, Git, Eclipse and Jenkin will all be considered assets to your success in this position.
