New Brunswick Community College (NBCC)

Reporting to the Manager of Student Development, as a member of the Student Success Team, you will act as a liaison with Indigenous learners, NBCC and First Nations communities. The successful applicant will provide culturally relevant student support with an emphasis on the unique history, knowledge and learning goals of Indigenous students. Experience, in providing access to holistic services relevant to students in the form of cultural, academic, emotional and social supports, is required. The Indigenous Student Advisor (ISA) uses their understanding of student "need to belong" rather than be tokenized, to create opportunities for students to establish friendships and peer support while attending NBCC. The Indigenous Student Advisor brings a strong knowledge of the Indigenous post-secondary education and the funding, scholarships and bursaries available and provides excellent assistance and encouragement to students in finding funding.

The ISA facilitates understanding between the student and the College on cultural and social issues that may prevent student success. Working with Indigenous Education staff, Training and Employment staff, and First Nations communities, the ISA maintains regular communication with students. The Advisor will work with the Registrar's Office to report on number of Indigenous students and will keep the Manager of Student Development up to date on activities and issues. This position requires excellent leadership, professional, judgement, communication and organizational skills, as well as experience in advocacy and conflict resolution. The successful incumbent will participate in recruitment activities, graduate employment services and other duties as necessary.

Required qualifications for this opportunity include a minimum of a High School Diploma plus one (1) year post-secondary in the field of Indigenous/Aboriginal Studies, Community Services or a related field with a minimum of five (5) years of related experience; or a High School Diploma plus a two (2) year Diploma in the field of Indigenous/Aboriginal Studies, Community Services or a related field with a minimum of four (4) years of related experience. Experience should include at least two (2) years of experience working with Indigenous peoples in an educational or community development setting. Indigenous ancestry and strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, communities, customs, practices and communication styles is required. Candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet these qualifications on their resumes.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office as well as written and spoken competence in English is required. Candidates must possess a valid Driver's License as some travel will be required.

Preference may be given to candidates who have experience working in a post-secondary environment and/or to those with supervisory experience.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered as equivalent. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be raised.

NBCC offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package that includes a competitive bi-weekly salary ranging from $1,598 to $1,935. This is a unionized position where the terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the New Brunswick Union of Public and Private Employees collective agreement (Administrative and Program Support Services Group) for the College.
